Professor Francesco Giorgino

Professor of Endocrinology, University of Bari Aldo Moro, Italy

Prof. Francesco Giorgino graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Bari in 1988, specialised in Endocrinology at the University of Catania in 1991 and obtained a PhD in Endocrinological and Metabolic Sciences at the University of Naples 'Federico II' in 1996.
Since 2002, he has been Full Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases at the University of Bari Aldo Moro and, since 2004, Director of the Complex O.U. of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases at the Azienda Ospedaliera Policlinico di Bari. From 2004 to 2015, he was Director of the School of Specialisation in Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases at the University of Bari Aldo Moro. Since 1 November 2015, he has been Director of the Department of Emergency and Organ Transplantation at the University of Bari Aldo Moro and from 1 March 2015 to June 2019, he was Pro-rector for Research at the University.
From 1990 to 1994 he worked at the Joslin Diabetes Center and Harvard Medical School in Boston (USA) first as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and then as a Visiting Scientist. In support of his training and research activities, he has received numerous grants and research awards: from the National Research Council, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), the Mary K. Iacocca Foundation (USA), the Italian Endocrinology Society (SIE) (Bracco Under 30 Award, 1992; Radim Under 35 Award, 1997; Cassano Award, 2003; Aldo Pinchera Lifetime Achievement Award, 2013), by the Italian Society of Diabetology (SID) (Boehringer Mannheim Italy National Award for Clinical and/or Experimental Diabetology, 1992; Alcmeone Award, 2008), and by the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) (2000 EASD/Glaxo Wellcome Burden of Diabetes Research Fellowship).

He was Delegate for Italy in COST Actions of the European Commission: in COST B5 ("Molecular Mechanisms in the Etiology of NIDDM", 1995-1999), in COST B17 ("Insulin resistance, obesity, and diabetes mellitus in the elderly", 1999-2004, and in COST BM0602 ("Adipose tissue: a key target for prevention of the metabolic syndrome", 2006-2011). He is a member of various national and international scientific societies. He has been a member of the Steering Committee of the SID and the SIE, playing active roles in various bodies of these Societies (Coordinator of the Study Group 'Prevention of Diabetes Type 2' of the SID, Member and Coordinator of the Scientific Commission of the SID, Coordinator of the Scientific Commission of the SIE). He was one of the 10 Experts who took part in the international conference "Individualizing therapies in type 2 diabetes mellitus based on patient characteristics: what we know and what we need to know", convened by The Endocrine Society and the American Diabetes Association in April 2009, which produced a consensus document on the individualization of therapy in type 2 diabetes mellitus. He was President of the Italian Society of Endocrinology (SIE) from 2019 to 2021. He is President of the Foundation for Research of the Italian Society of Endocrinology (Fo.Ri.SIE). He is a member of the Commission of Experts of the Ministry of University and Research (MIUR) for the National Research Plan (PNR 2021-2027), Health theme. He is Vice President of the 'Saverio and Isabella Cianciola Foundation for Biomedical Research'.
In support of his research activities, Prof. Giorgino has received funding from the JDRF, the BIOMED2 and COST programmes of the European Community, the EASD, the Italian Association for Cancer Research (AIRC), the SID, the National Research Council (CNR), the Ministry of Universities and Research (MIUR), the Ministry of Health, various pharmaceutical industries (Eli Lilly & Co, NovoNordisk, Pfizer Italia, Merck Serono, Takeda, AstraZeneca/BMS), and by private foundations (Monte dei Paschi di Siena, Banco di Napoli).
He is the author of about 300 scientific publications, in prestigious journals such as: PNAS; The Journal of Clinical Investigation; JCI Insight; The Journal of Biological Chemistry; American Journal of Physiology; Molecular Endocrinology; Endocrinology; Cancer Research; Diabetes; Diabetes Care; Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism; Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism; and many others (H-index: 64 [Google Scholar], citation no.: 14500 [Google Scholar]; overall Impact Factor: 1500). He is or has been a member of the Editorial Board of the journals Endocrinology, PLoS ONE, Journal of Endocrinology, Diabetes Metabolism Research and Reviews, Acta Diabetologica, and Cardiorenal Medicine.
